Hard flooring vs carpet - which is the one for you?

Hard flooring vs carpet - which is the one for you?

With summer coming to an end, there is still time to squeeze in some last minute home improvements before the dark and cold autumn weather rolls in.

Changing your flooring doesn't take long, with most projects being completed within a few hours depending on the size of your home. Before the weather starts to turn, you can get your flooring replaced and decide on a fantastic new carpet or hard floor - but which one to go for?

Every type of flooring has its benefits as well as its limitations, so establishing which one is right for your home is important from both a practical and stylistic viewpoint.

Carpets

Still the most common flooring solution, carpets come with straightforward benefits that have been the driving force behind their use in our homes for hundreds of years. The bottom line is that they're the most comfortable thing to have underfoot - they also come in a wide range of styles, colours and textures whilst also helping to reduce noise. Because of this versatility, there will be a carpet that suits every room in every home.

Despite this, there are some drawbacks. Wear and tear is the most common, ultimately something that cannot be avoided over time. Carpet fibres cannot stand up to heavy traffic for too long, nor can they continue to fight against spillages. Pets are also problematic for carpets as their hairs will become embedded in the fibres and cause irritation to those with allergies or breathing conditions.

Hard Flooring

Thanks to advances in the manufacturing process, hard flooring like Karndean or vinyl now comes in a range of styles and colours so no matter what room you are refitting, there will be a style to suit your existing decor. Not only that, hard flooring provides a much simpler cleaning surface in case of spillages as well as remaining sturdy in areas of heavy traffic over time.

Although hard flooring is simpler to maintain, it does come with limitations. These surfaces are durable but they come at the cost of comfort underfoot, with the added potential of slipping if the surface becomes wet. Not only that, it cannot match up to the noise and heat retention abilities of carpet.

There is no wrong answer here, only personal preference in your own home. Also remember you don’t have to have the same flooring throughout the house; you can enjoy all the flooring types across your different rooms, vinyl in the kitchen and carpets in your bedroom for example.
