Planning for new flooring: what you need to know

Create the right atmosphere
When choosing what type of new floor to have, from carpet to hard floors, think carefully about how you want the space to feel. For example, if you have a small room, you may want to make it feel bigger, but if the area is quite large, a flooring that creates a cosy atmosphere, like carpet, might be better suited.
Choose a style to suit your lifestyle
Another important factor to consider when planning for new flooring is how your lifestyle will impact on your chosen style. If you have a busy family home with lots of footsteps, you’ll need a solution that’s hardwearing, durable and preferably, stain-resistant. Whereas if your home is quiet and relaxing, you may want to choose style over practicality.
Measure accurately
So you can calculate exactly how much flooring you’ll need, measure the room where it will be laid at least twice. If you have a simple square or rectangular room, multiply the width by the length to get the total area. For example, if the room is 3m x 5m, you’ll need 15m² of flooring.
If your room has a recess and is tricky to measure, split the area into different sections and measure them separately. Then simply add them all up to get your total.
