Essential last-minute jobs to do before Christmas

With Christmas now just days away, it can feel like there are a million things still to do. Don’t panic, however, there’s still plenty of time to create the perfect celebration and to help you get the essentials right, we’ve created a list of 4 last-minute jobs that shouldn’t be ignored.

1) Ensure everyone has a bed

If you’re hosting this Christmas day or New Year’s Eve and are having guests to stay, ensure they get the best night’s sleep by planning where everyone is going to sleep in advance. To really ensure your loved ones are fully prepared for the festivities ahead, buy a brand new mattress for your spare bedroom. If you don’t have that much space, invest in a day bed which, as the name suggests, can be used as a sofa by day and bed by night.

2) Make a list of everything you need for Christmas dinner

When you’re in the middle of whipping up a feast for Christmas dinner, the last thing you need is realising you’ve forgotten the potatoes and making a last-minute dash across town for the one shop that’s actually open. So, before you set off to do your big food shop for the holiday, make a list detailing every item you will need. Make sure to include everything, even if you’re sure you’ll remember it because, once in the supermarket, it’s easy to get distracted with attractive displays and the sheer number of people.

3) Count your clean towels and cutlery

An easy job to overlook in the run-up to the big day itself is ensuring you have enough of everything, especially clean towels to offer your guests. Another item you may find you don’t have enough of at dinner is cutlery. Over the year, it’s easy to lose your knives, forks and spoons as they slip behind sofas or get left at work, so make sure there is enough in your drawers for everyone to have a full set.

4) Bake food in advance

To save time and last-minute stress on Christmas day, prepare any dishes that can be made and stored in advance. Peel vegetables and store in cold water to keep them fresh, wrap sausages in bacon, make the stuffing, flavour and freeze red cabbage and even roast the potatoes. By prepping as much as you can in the lead up to the day itself, you leave yourself much more time to enjoy the day.
