Tips for keeping your home warm this winter

Tips for keeping your home warm this winter

You’ve probably felt it, that tell-tale sign that winter is fast approaching. The colder weather and the season for fluffy hats, thick gloves and earmuffs is officially upon us. While it’s easy to wrap up warm when heading outside, how can you help keep your home comfortable without cranking up the heating? Read on for our top tips on staying warm this winter.

Replace hard floors with carpet

Not only does carpet provide a soft, fluffy surface for chilly toes to walk on but it also acts as an effective insulator. The thick and fleecy material of carpet helps to stop warm air from escaping into the cold outside, maintaining the room’s temperature and helping to keep your energy bills under control. At Carpet Barn, we have an impressive selection of carpets for you to choose from, including pet-friendly, stain resistant, high end and budget-friendly options!

Place rugs on chilly floors

If swapping your lovely hard floors for carpet isn’t for you, consider using a rug instead. A less permanent and more flexible flooring solution than carpet, rugs are also available in a huge array of sizes, styles and piles so you’re bound to find the perfect fit for your room. A well-chosen and placed rug will help keep your feet nice and warm as well as helping to trap escaping heat. We particularly like a thick, fluffy rug in the winter.

Stop drafts with excluders

Block cold blasts of air blowing under the door by placing draft excluders at the bottom of the door. While relatively cheap to buy, and they often come in various fun designs, draft excluders don’t have to cost you a penny. You can use a spare piece of pipe lagging, for instance, a rolled-up blanket or you can even make your own by stuffing old tights with old clothes!

Keep your oven open

Once you’ve finished cooking up a delicious meal in your oven, don’t waste the energy and heat that has built up. Instead, simply leave the oven door open to give the hot air a chance to escape into your kitchen and waft into the rest of the house. A simple trick that you’ve probably never thought of before! Of course, make sure to keep children and pets away while the oven cools down.

Wrap up with layers and blankets

Of course, the best thing you can do to keep warm at home during the colder weather is to wrap up warm in layers of your favourite comfy clothes. Another great way to keep toasty is to snuggle down on your sofa or bed with plenty of blankets and, in extreme circumstances, hot water bottles.
