Increase in sleeping issues for UK due to heatwave
The UK is experiencing the biggest heatwave to date since 1976; many people are even deciding to have a ‘staycation’ this year instead of holidaying abroad! Although hard to believe the increase in temperatures does have its drawbacks, research has shown that there’s been a large number of people reporting they’re not getting enough sleep.
Sleep deprivation is leaving people feeling irritable and less productive at work, which is becoming a problem. Most homes in the UK are not built with integrated air conditioning systems, this means that there are limited options to cool down a property enough to make it a comfortable environment for sleeping.
5 tips for a brilliant night’s sleep
Summer duvet
The Sleep Council recommends that a comfortable sleeping temperature is in between 16 and 18 degrees, and anything higher than this can be difficult to sleep in. Ensure that you are using a lighter ‘summer’ duvet with a low tog rating. If this still feels too warm why not ditch the duvet altogether and use a cotton sheet?
Avoid caffeine
Drinking caffeine before you go to sleep will definitely have an effect on how much sleep you get. Snacks and drinks that contain caffeine might lead to overactive digestion in your body, or dehydration. Drinking alcohol or having dinner straight before sleep will also have the same effects, so try to avoid these examples for a better night’s sleep.
