Why can't I sleep? Remedies for a good night's sleep

Difficulty sleeping can lead to all sorts of problems, and it is difficult to know what to do if you are struggling to get the recommended number of hours per night.
There are a number of different reasons why a good night’s sleep might be proving elusive.
- If you find yourself constantly watching the clock this can have a negative impact on your sleep. Removing all clocks and watches from the room can ease some of the anxiety you feel when you realise that you only have a few hours left until it is time to get up.
- You may think that an alcoholic drink before bed will relax you, and result in a better night’s sleep. However, alcohol actually interferes with the quality of sleep that you have with the result that you do not feel properly rested when you wake up.
- If you often go to bed feeling hungry this can result in interrupted sleep. A light snack before going to bed can eliminate this problem, and leave you feeling more refreshed in the morning.
- Sleeping with a partner who snores can be one of the biggest causes of sleep deprivation. Elevating their pillow, or changing their sleeping position can sometimes help, although sleeping in a separate bedroom is sometimes the only solution.
- If your bedroom is very cluttered this can also have a negative impact on your sleep. Try to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary; a calm and peaceful place where you can unwind after a busy day. Why not invest in new bedroom furniture to keep your space neat and tidy?
- If you have bright streetlights outside of your bedroom window they could be keeping you awake. So too could digital alarm clocks, and electrical items that are left on standby. Remove these items from your bedroom, and fit blackout curtains if necessary.
- If you find yourself unable to sleep due to stress or worry then it can help to write your worries down before bedtime, then practice some relaxation exercises. If you still find yourself unable to sleep it can be helpful to read a book or listen to soothing music.
- Whilst your bed may still feel comfortable, it is highly possible that those old mattress springs are what is keeping you awake at night. When was the last time your changed your mattress? It could be time for a whole new bedstead
